Walking with St. Vincent de Paul: Serving the Poor in Our Community

St. Vincent de Paul (1581–1660) devoted his life to serving the poor, the sick, and the forgotten. Known as the “Apostle of Charity,” he believed that faith must be lived out through concrete acts of love. Vincent worked tirelessly to organize charitable efforts, care for abandoned children, and remind the Church of its duty to serve those on the margins. His vision gave rise to a legacy of compassion that continues through the St. Vincent de Paul Society today.

Here in Rapid City, the St. Vincent de Paul Society lives out that mission by offering direct help to neighbors in need—whether that’s food, rent or utility assistance, or simply listening and walking with those who are struggling. Inspired by St. Vincent’s example, volunteers bring hope and dignity where it’s needed most.

This year, the Society continues to seek resources to expand its outreach, including applying for grants to better serve families in need. These efforts ensure that more neighbors have access to food, housing support, and essential services—keeping Vincent’s mission alive today.

Why does this matter today? Because the struggles Vincent saw in 17th-century France are still present in our own community. Poverty, hunger, and isolation remain real challenges for many families. By supporting the St. Vincent de Paul Society—whether through volunteering, financial support, or prayer—you become part of Vincent’s living mission to bring Christ’s love to those in need.
